The Poultry Growers Project was started several years ago to help promote a product growers could grow while supporting the Mobile Processing Unit (MPU), which the society is working towards having for the region.
To date, the project has grown and farmers are making a profit and the region’s consumers are enjoying local chickens that taste like chicken. All producers are getting positive feedback on their product.
Many growers have joined together to buy feed and this has indeed helped with the opportunity to be profitable.
This project has not been without its challenges. One year we received birds when the temp outside was -16 and the mortality was high. With lots of support from other growers we where able to get on track and finish without further complications.
Currently we are bringing a MPU from Kelowna and we are most fortunate to have Okanagan Poultry Processing as a wonderful asset and without them we couldn’t be growing the important opportunity for many producers.
We all look forward to a time when we can both grow our birds and feed them locally.
