Agricultural Land Survey

The agricultural land survey project was a combined effort of the Ag Society, RDKB, BEDC and summer student program. The projects goal was to do soil sampling on several farms in the region, ask a series of questions that included ideas and problems the regions farmers are having.

In total there where 44 soil samples taken throughout the region. Reports are available here: (link to come). There were concerns around the presence of aluminum in the top 6-8 inches of the soil. Aluminum slows root development and can be toxic to plants. In most cases there was a lack of major elements that could be supplemented with fertilizers or composted manures. The Ag Society is looking at the possibility 0f composting farms’ manure to help build up regional soils and provide funds for animal farmers.

The information gathered will be used for years to come and we would like to thank Donna Dean with the RDKB who guided us through the details of this necessary project.
